TODAY, PUT ASIDE THOUGHTS OF OURSELVES AND THE WORLD

Dr. Amoxycillin and Yang Wei continued their search for Professor Eternal. It was as if they had formed a special alliance. Fueled by a strange and romantic thirst for revenge, Dr. Amoxycillin was determined to expose the hospital’s secrets to the patients. Back when he was in medical school, he had studied medical ethics and had always agreed with the notion that the patients’ right to know took precedence over everything else. But the Hospital Ship locked up all kinds of key information under the pretext that it was acting in their patients’ best interest. Meanwhile, patients were left in the dark. Dr. Amoxycillin had never been happy with this arrangement, but there had been nothing he could do. However, now that he had been exiled and already died once, he had nothing left to lose, and this revealed the deep disdain he felt for his own profession. Feelings of frustration and abasement had built up inside him ever since he had been forced to study medicine as a child, and they finally had a release.

Dr. Amoxycillin led Yang Wei all over, but they didn’t find the slightest trace of Professor Eternal. They were fortunate to discover a huge cache of old mildewy books in the museum’s rare-book room, which they opened to discover early patient records. Originally these were to be used as primary research material for doctors to consult while writing their creative works, but none of these books had been entered into the hospital’s EHRs, or Electronic Health Records. EHRs had a host of problems—accessibility, cost, security, privacy, legal liabilities for doctors—and these issues frequently caused anxiety for patients.

The two of them searched the documents madly for a full day and then on through the night. Finally, they found Yang Wei’s medical files. They were not complete, but they contained enough to give them a general picture of Yang Wei’s medical history. According to the records, a long time ago, a patient named Yang Wei boarded the Hospital Ship. At the time, he walked with a stiff gait, had a blank look on his face, and was sweating profusely and constantly groaning. Before that he had sought treatment at multiple clinics and hospitals, but it had been useless. According to the patient’s own description, pain had been his constant companion. The pain appeared in various parts of his body: sometimes his head, sometimes his chest, and most frequently his abdomen. Later it spread to his joints, like a fiery dragon, constantly burning him, strangling him. The pain led the patient to a state of depression, and he attempted suicide on multiple occasions. When Professor Eternal asked Yang Wei when his pain had first started, he couldn’t remember. It was as if the pain had been torturing him for several lifetimes.

When Yang Wei first arrived, he could scream and cry, but he couldn’t speak. He could only use crude hand symbols to express his emotions, and he refused to engage in meaningful communication.
